InSSIDer is a program for obtaining detailed information about all available Wi-Fi networks in the visibility area of the device on which it is running. The application is developed by MetaGeek and is available for Windows and Mac OS X computers (there are unofficial builds from source code like Kismet and for Linux, FreeBSD). The program is open source (posted on Github), which guarantees the absence of malicious code in it.
Functions
InSSIDer for Windows and Mac OS allows:
- view in a convenient graphical interface a list of all available Wi-Fi for the device;
- get information about the signal strength (in dBm) for each network, as well as its MAC address, encryption type, SSID, channel used and current bandwidth;
- get information about the current driver version for the installed WiFi module in the PC or laptop;
- can and analyze information from GPS modules.
Since version 3, it also has the ability to generate automatic reports about the wireless network equipment and make recommendations about the optimal channel for the chosen WiFi network.
This WiFi scanner supports all generations of wireless networks, including
WiFi 6 (802.11ax). But it only shows them if the WiFi adapter installed in your computer or laptop is compatible with them.
Who can use it
The most common scenario where the application is used is when a new access point is installed and configured and when the router needs to select the optimal channel for the wireless data transfer (which improves ping rates and reduces the percentage of "dead" packets). You can also use it to select the optimal location in the room for the repeater. You can use the Wi-Fi adapter operation reports to remotely contact your ISP with the problems with the Internet access.
InSSIDer in Russian you can download the current version free of charge on our site. It should be noted that the developer does not provide an official translation of the interface into Russian, so the russification is provided by third-party users.
