Parrot Security OS is a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian (it is planned to use the Devuan base in the future), designed for testing information security systems, checking their resistance to hacking. It is a kind of competitor to
Kali Linux. Mate is used by default as the graphical environment. The OS can be used in Live mode or installed on the hard disk (the installer is taken from Debian).
Parrot Security OS Linux distribution
has a small set of preinstalled tools for security testing, hacking, decryption, reverse engineering. But, if necessary, the user can connect any third-party repositories (compatible with the deb-structure) and install the software he needs.
Basic software set allows:
- review and diagnose network connections (both Ethernet and wireless);
- recover passwords and access keys to WiFi, encrypted files, archives;
- intercept and log packages;
- organize DDoS attacks;
- emulating connections using various network protocols;
- implementing packets into encrypted network connections (to de-authorize connected users);
- emulating other devices (BadUSB functionality).
In Live mode user can also choose booting option (with data preservation, with maximum privacy etc.)
And the distribution developers also released a Netinstall image for this OS. That is, there is only the installer, but the graphical environment and a list of pre-installed programs the user can choose during the installation or creation of their own assembly.
How to install and use
Parrot Security OS can be downloaded in the form of ISO-image. It is recommended to use the Rufus application to write it to a flash drive in Windows. In Linux it is done with the command dd, in MacOS - with Boot Camp. And then it remains to reboot your PC or laptop and select to boot from the prepared USB flash drive. After that the boot menu will appear, which is used to install the distribution kit to the hard disk or to launch it in the Live mode.
